What is the General Federation of Women's Club
TAWC is proud to be a part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC). GFWC was organized in March 1889 and received its Charter by Congress in 1901. During the first century GFWC accomplishments were many including: women's rights, establishing 75 percent of the country's public libraries, developing kindergartens in the public schools and working to establish food and drug regulations. Now in its second century, GFWC continues its commitment to making our communities and the world a better place for all.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs is a unifying force, bringing together local women’s clubs, with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. With almost 80,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries, GFWC members are community leaders who work locally to create global change by supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward world peace and understanding.
The California Federation of Women’s Clubs (CFWC) soon followed suit and was organized in January 1900 and became the thirty-seventh state to join the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in May of the same year. “Strength United is Stronger” was chosen as their motto. This still holds true today as federated women's clubs work together to make a difference throughout our local communities and the world. TAWC has been a member of GFWC since 1958.
